Best Egg Chairs on the Internet

Back in February or March, I found a big beautiful hanging egg chair in Marshall’s and it was probably my favorite home find of all time. You just cannot beat a rare Marshall’s or TJ Maxx find. After sharing photos of it a few times on Instagram, I had some questions about where I found it, which resulted in me explaining how lucky I was to find it at my local Marshall’s and wishing them luck at finding their’s. However, after doing some research online, I found several similar chairs that, if I hadn’t lucked out, I’d probably be selecting from online!

There are two main factors to consider when shopping for one of these bad boys: the color scheme of your space and if you have a ceiling it could hang from (or if you’ll need a standing one). Ours is outdoors on a non-covered deck so the standing option was perfect however I’ve seen several of these hanging from a covered porch or even in a living room. It just depends on your vision for the space.

Let’s get into what was found…

I’ve been living in ours all spring and summer and it’s been my favorite part of our outdoor space, for sure. Hopefully this helps a little bit if you’re looking for one! Happy Tuesday!

The Best Denim Shorts Brand I’ve Tried

A couple of years ago, I was browsing the internet and came across a new-to-me denim brand, Agolde. Being a little pricey, I was hesitant to try their denim but, overtime, I saw more and more of these cute denim shorts on Pinterest and I ended up trying out the darker wash. I wore them as part of almost every outfit on the weekends so, this year, I decided to grab the lighter wash. While they run a bit large (order 1-2 sizes down from your normal size), I love them!

Denim shorts can be so tricky to buy sometimes but I really love how high-waisted these are while not being too short. They’re short for sure, but I don’t feel uncomfortable when wearing them. I wore them to a concert last weekend, to Lowe’s, around the house, with t-shirts, sweaters, cardigan, and a blazer. Usually around August/September, I like to wear denim shorts but with more fall-appropriate pieces like sweaters and booties… it’s a good way to transition into a new season (clearly not work appropriate but perfect for weekends/nights).

Outfit Details:

Distressed Denim Shorts (AGOLDE) || shop other styles and lengths here || Crop Sweater

When it comes to denim pants, Levi’s is my go-to, and I have found a pair of shorts I really love by Levi’s, but I still haven’t found anything (shorts) to beat the fit of Agolde. They also have a longer version I’d love to try on. I haven’t tried any of their full-length jeans but I’ll let you know once I do.

Last weekend was the perfect mix of plans + no plans… went to see Keith Urban (who was amazing), painted a wall in the house, stocked up on groceries, watched the movie ‘I Feel Pretty’. Next weekend will be a little more busy and then I’ll be going out of town for a conference in NYC.

Hope y’all have a great week!

Friday Q&A

I’m liking the idea of saving Friday’s for just chatting random things, answering ?’s, and keeping it simple. I’m thinking each Friday I’ll answer a few questions I’ve received in emails/DM’s/etc. I’ll try to think of a more creative name over time. 🙂

This week in a nutshell:

– started reading this devotional book each day by recommendation of Madison.
– went to a hand-lettering class at Thanks a Latte hosted by my friend, Laura.
– started planning/designing a new [small] space in our house.
– tried out a new co-working space in Raleigh, Spaces.
– ordered a new eye cream (a couple different ones, actually) thanks to your recommendations!

Yes! I try to still do their “studio classes” or daily moves 3-5x per week. I am not in a stage of life where I’m intensely into working out and having abs but I pretty much have to workout for my mind to stay focused and for overall positivity and health. I love it because it is different every day and you can do it at home! A few months ago I wrote more about Tone it Up here.

I love Holly Springs. It has a lot of growth coming in the next year, especially with their “downtown”. I love following along with the plans for 2019! When we moved here, we knew we would go to Raleigh less but we still go 1-2x a week. There are a lot of things to do in Holly Springs though. My favorites include: going to the farmer’s market downtown on Saturday mornings (we ride our bikes there sometimes or bring our dog), go to the local parks (Bass Lake, Sugg Farm, and Parrish Womble… luckily we live very close to all 3), order mac ‘n cheese or the ‘tavern salad’ at My Way Tavern downtown, watch a baseball game at Ting Park, have a glass of wine at Niche Wine Lounge, drive a few miles down the road to Aviator Brewing Co., catch a service at Hope Community Church (technically, in Apex but 5 min from us). We go to Apex often since it’s so close but we try to find new things to do closer to home. At Sugg Farm, you’ll find a lot of annual festivals like Dog Day in the Park, HollyFest, Main St. Christmas, and more. One thing I’ve noticed is that the town is very, very family-friendly and there are a lot of events for kids, specifically. Another spot that has been having more and more events is the little center that Thanks a Latte is located in, Main Street Square. TJ and I like to visit Thanks a Latte on the weekends whenever we can! It’s the cutest little coffee shop that will just warm your heart.

Another thing to note: HS is super close to Cary/Apex/Fuquay… so there’s usually also festivals, live music, events there too. Waverly Place is not too far from us at all and they have Wind Down Wednesdays.

Raleigh is definitely where it’s at for the best dining spots. A few of my favorites are: Sitti, Taverna Agora, Whiskey Kitchen, Raleigh Beer Garden, The Cortez, Gravy, Brewery Bhavana. If you’re in the mood for some traditional southern breakfast (like a giant greasy biscuit), Big Ed’s City Market is a fave. I love Sola Coffee which is a little farther out (from us) and Happy and Hale for quicker bites to eat. There’s so many new ones coming in the next year too that I can’t wait to try… O-ku Sushi (super popular in Charleston), Barcelona Wine Bar, a new coffee shop in the new Dillon called Heirloom. There’s a new ramen place coming to town too. SO MANY restaurants, so little time. Aside from dining in Raleigh, I love going to concerts when we can (so many music venues), the State Farmer’s Market, and seeing what’s new popping up on Glenwood Ave.

I’ve written a few posts that go more into depth with blogging so I’ll leave the links here and here! I started my blog in 2014 and there isn’t one specific reason I started but more of a variety of ways I felt called to create it until finally I just went for it. If you’re interested, definitely read this one.

TJ and I have a date tonight to see Keith Urban & Kelsea Ballerini perform and I cannot wait to see either of them! We’re also hoping to try out a couple of new restaurants this weekend so I’ll keep you posted on anything good! Incase you missed recent posts on here, I shared my July favorites, Nordstrom Sale picks, and a fall capsule wardrobe. xoxo

July Favorites

Can you believe next week will be August? I thought this year just started and now we’re about to be in the 8th month of it. HOW? Today I thought I’d take a moment to reflect back on July and some of my ‘favorite things’ throughout the month…. ‘july favorites’, whether that be favorite thing I’ve been wearing on repeat, weekly recipe I’ve loved, music, restaurant, etc. Let’s get into it!

Wearing on Repeat:

in no particular order…

One recipe we have been making at least twice a week = mexican rice/lime bowls! Basically, we’ve had less time to make dinner these days because of TJ’s real-estate class so we’ve resorted to this: brown rice seasoned with chili powder and cumin, add black beans, corn, cherry tomatoes cut in half, shredded cheese, avocado, and squeeze lime juice all over it. You could really add whatever you wanted in this… chicken, peppers, sour cream, queso, salsa, anything. I am slightly addicted to these and it is pretty nutritious too!

The first week of July I went a full week with no dessert. My main goal was to just start craving sugar less and it worked! Afterwards, I tried searching for some frozen yogurt I could have a little bit of without feeling super guilty of daily desserts. I ended up trying a pint of Yasso and fell in love! Coincidentally, they emailed me a couple of weeks later to partner with them and it was fate. Anyways, I highly recommend the “Mint Championchip” and “Rollin’ in the Dough” flavors. But you can’t go wrong with any.

Before I worked from home, I rarely took morning walks. Now that my schedule is more flexible, I’ve discovered my new favorite way to start the day (especially in the summer, before the heat) and that is to take my dog out on a long walk (45 minutes) around the local parks and listen to a podcast. I’ll have to write a post on my favorite podcasts but usually I like listening to something I’m learning from such as social media tips, financial tips, and just life advice in general for staying positive!

For some reason this month, my mind has been going 50mph at 11pm when it’s time to go to bed. I downloaded the ‘calm app’ and have started playing a “bedtime story”… it actually helps a lot! I don’t remember listening to the stories for more than like 3 minutes and it’s usually a very soothing bedtime story teller lol complete with calming outdoorsy sound effects. I’ve been using a free trial but I’m considering purchasing the year long subscription to the app because there are a lot of different ways to use it! Does anyone else use this and love it slash is it worth it to purchase?!

One of the best things in Raleigh this month… the sunflower fields in Dorothea Dix Park! By now they’ve passed their peak bloom but, incase you missed them, make sure you visit them next year! Next up… pumpkin patches.

Yeti’s have been popular but where it’s really at is the ‘feti‘… the fake yeti aka this cup on Amazon for way less but the same quality. I’ve always been a fan of using Nalgene bottles for getting my daily water intake which are great for when you’re really on the go but I’ve lately been loving using this cup everyday for when I’m just sitting at my desk. It’s huge and if I fill it up 3x I know I’m good. It also comes in approximately 1,000 colors.

Oh, the Nordstrom Sale. Are you tired of hearing about it? I kindof am but there is one item that I will never tire of and it is this barefoot dreams cardigan. Is it a splurge item? For an at-home cardigan, yes. But will I wear it almost every single day? Also, yes. It is made of the softest material that just makes you want to curl up with a good book, drink some coffee, and never move. Speaking of “curling up with a good book”, my grandma used to always recommend that as an activity when it rained in the summer and, as a child, I would be like “that’s not fun” but now it actually sounds like the best activity ever.

At the beginning of July, I started using this shampoo and conditioner and I don’t know if I’ll ever find one I love more! I love the smell, how soft and untangled my hair is after a shower, and the volume it helps provide, and the fact that it helps repair heat-damaged hair. It’s definitely pricey but I think they’ll both last me a long time! It has me curious to try more of their products like hairspray and dry shampoo. If you’re interested, you can always test our their travel size first! I also noticed they have a beauty set on sale as part of the Anniversary Sale.

This month started with a short trip to the beach to stay with some of my family and it was MOST definitely needed. If you haven’t had a chance to get to the beach this year, I’d highly recommend booking a weekend as soon as you can and going phone-less the entire time. I’m already missing it but I also love visiting in the fall after all of the kids go back to school.

Happy & Hale’s newest location opened up in North Hills not too long ago so while we were in the area, we had to check it out! Oh how I wish we had one closer to where we live… I would eat there every day. Their avocado toast is on point and has me thinking it might be one of the best. Have you eaten here? What do you order?

Those are all I can think of now but I hope you have a good last few days of July! Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Friday!

Incase you missed yesterday’s video about building a ‘fall capsule wardrobe‘, you can watch it here… but warning: it might make you want to buy fall pieces at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. You’re actually in luck because the sale is now open to the public! Meaning you don’t need a Nordstrom card to shop… anybody can! While building that capsule wardrobe, I used several older pieces I had but I’d say about 75% of it was part of the Nordstrom sale. If you’re not interested in shopping the sale, today’s post probably isn’t for you. But, if you are, grab a cup of coffee because we are going to dive deep into these sale items! As the day goes on, I’ll slowly add more and more full looks to this post as well as the LiketoKnow.it App (so download on your phone if you haven’t already… it’s a really quick and easy way to find links to looks you love).

PS: There is a $400 giveaway at the bottom of this post thanks to Lili Alessandra, a luxury bedding brand available at Nordstrom!

Capsule Wardrobes

Fall Capsule Wardrobe (19 Pieces, 45 Outfits)

watch full video of capsule wardrobe here

It’s time for another capsule wardrobe! After this post from the spring became one of my most popular blog posts of all time, I was excited to put together another capsule wardrobe for the upcoming season. I didn’t originally plan to post this in July but seeing that most of these items are on major sale now, I figured I would go ahead and share! I used only 19 pieces to create 45 different outfit combinations and stuck to earthy tones and items I could mix and match with basically everything. This time I wanted to create a video and I specifically edited it for the new IGTV so that is why you’ll see it oriented vertically if you view on Youtube. For the full experience, I’d recommend watching on IGTV. After you watch the video, I’d love to hear your favorite outfit!

19 Pieces:

*items above are clickable but see below for more options*

I went with two plaid tops (because, #fall), a printed dressier blouse option, a black/white striped long sleeve tee, and a white/creamy mock neck sweater light enough to layer over other options! It’s amazing how many outfits you can get out of 5 tops if you keep them in the right color palette. For the plaid tops, I went for a navy/earthy tone one as well as an old white windowpane flannel I’ve had for years.

The key to this part is keeping it neutral… navy, tan, olive green (those are neutrals in fall, right?). One pair of dark skinny jeans (on sale/size up), an olive pleated midi skirt (comes in petite, tall, and regular), a tan mini suede skirt (also on sale), and some wide leg navy blue cropped pants (also comes in tall and regular). It’s possible to create 45 outfits with 4 bottoms… see for yourself here!

It can be easy to go shoe crazy once fall comes around but, the truth is, you really only need a few pairs if you choose the right ones. I went with one tall pair of boots, a shorter pair of similar color suede booties that can be dressed up or down, a more casual bootie in a dark brown, slip-on sneakers (mine are so old), and neutral flats. With all of these shoes being completely different but still neutral colored, they made similar outfits look completely different.

To really complete each look, I added in two outerwear options that could go with so many looks, one navy blue dress (doesn’t have to be this specific one), and a leopard scarf (only $11)! This blazer is one of my favorite pieces ever (and on sale!) along with my good ‘ol Madewell denim jacket.

I hope this was helpful! I know we’re two months away from fall but I had a few people say my spring one was a little late so, in blog world, we’re always a season ahead planning and prepping. If you need me to help you find any of these options (if sold out, for example), please let me know and I would be happy to help! Don’t forget to comment your favorite outfit on the video!

My Nordstrom Anniversary Top Ten

Happy Monday!

I wanted to share my TOP 10 of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale since I know this sale can be so overwhelming. If you haven’t had the chance to shop the sale (public access will start this Friday), I’m hoping there will be a lot of restocks on popular items. I can’t believe how quickly some things sold out.

I ordered a few items online that will come tomorrow so, if you are curious to see those, I’ll add them in over the next few days.

Best Sellers:

If any of these items are sold out in your size, I’d recommend checking back daily! I’ve already seen them restock some popular options.

I’ve always loved Zella leggings and the brand in general but I’ve never actually owned a black pair of Zella leggings and thought that needed to change. I’m actually wearing these right now and I can’t say enough good things about the quality, comfort, and fit! I think they are the perfect “pants leggings” meaning they can be worn as pants with a long butt-covering blouse or cardigan and boots but they also work well as activewear! If you’re in need of a high quality black pair of leggings, these are IT.

This tee is one of the best sellers and for good reason! It’s so inexpensive, a great basic to have, and comes in so many colors. I went with the black/white stripes to mix and match with different outfit options but I love them all! This is another item that may sell out but check back for restocks!

I remember seeing this pullover on everyone throughout the winter months and never caved to getting one for myself. This time, I was walking around the store on the first day of the sale and came across this zip-up version (will likely restock later this week). I tried it on and immediately became one of my favorite things soon-to-be in my closet. If you run into me this fall or winter, you’ll likely see me wearing this, my leggings, and these sneakers. 🙂

As I was checking out, I saw this pillow from a distance and had to go see it for myself. I’ve found it hard to find the “chunky knit” look for less and I was shocked to see this price. I almost want to grab a few more because once fall/winter comes around, my favorite decorating trick is cozy pillows everywhere! This one comes in a bunch of colors too!

I’m not at all surprised that this skirt is almost sold out. I’m sure it will restock soon but this A-line suede skirt is marked down almost half off and comes in two beautiful neutral colors…. no wonder it’s one of the most popular items. I, surprisingly, went with the tan rather than the grey because I felt like it would go with more fall tops. I’ve already worn this multiple times on Instagram and I’m wearing the 25 (size down!).

One of my favorite boot styles is back again this year but even better! I wore a very similar pair all last year but this year’s style has an even pointier toe and just looks a bit more dressy, which I love! These are now under $100 and also come in black if you’re in need of an over-the-knee boot!

I don’t know what it is about these booties that made them the first thing to add to my cart but I just love the versatility and color for fall. My most worn shoe ever is a very similar bootie (same color/same style) but they got to be a little too worn and wrinkled so I thought it was time to upgrade to a new replacement pair! Super high quality and I know these will last me years and years!

This cardigan was really popular last year but I never wanted to spend over $100 for a cardigan… well, now they are a little under $100 and come in a new beautiful burgundy color along with ivory and black! I have a feeling I’ll be wearing this on repeat this year once the temps cool down a bit. I love the oversized fit and texture of this cozy thing.

I know I already included one pair of leggings earlier in this list but I had to save my best for (almost) last. Beyond Yoga High Waist leggings are my jam. They are, by far, the comfiest material to lounge around in, work out in, basically live in. I have them in grey, grey/black, and now a turquoise color once the UPS man delivers them. Unfortunately, they sold out super quick but should definitely be restocking, hopefully! I’ll let you know as soon as they do! Follow on IG stories for the quickest restock alerts.

My TOP favorite item in all of the sale is actually not clothing OR shoes (shocking). It is the coziest chunky-knit blanket that resembles the $500+ ones on Etsy but comes in at a much lower price of $65. I want every color. The size is more of a rectangle and isn’t the largest I’ve seen but, for the price, is so worth it. It makes such a difference in any room with the cozy texture. I posted a few photos of it on Instagram already and it isn’t sold out (yet)!

Hope you all have a good week! I’m working on a fun post for Friday so most of my time will be spent planning all of that. If you have any questions about the Nordstrom Sale, please let me know! I’d be happy to help!

xo, Shelby

I’ll likely share a few of my personal sale finds on Instagram later but, for now, I wanted to share the best picks across one of the top categories! There are some items that will 100% be sold out later today (happened last year) so if you think you see something you like, I’d go ahead and grab it before it’s gone. You’ll thank yourself once the fall season comes around! My #1 thing to buy during this sale? SHOES. Booties, boots, and flats. I have always picked up shoes during the sale and never ever regret it. I find myself getting so much wear out of these and feel so good about getting them discounted. Shoe brands that Nordstrom carries are high-quality, will last you a really long time, and can be worn with so many outfits throughout the year.

So let’s get into it! As a reminder, this is ‘early access’ meaning only Nordstrom Cardholders are able to shop; however, public access will begin at the end of next week!

A few items I think will sell out ASAP? This waffle cardigan, leopard flats, cozy oversized cardigan, cable cardigan and booties.

Wearing Lately & Sizing Info

I don’t know if it is just me but getting back into the swing of things this week has been slightly challenging… maybe because of the holiday ‘weekend’ feeling so long. I’ve never felt so tired at the start of the week. We got back from the beach over the weekend but had the best time staying with my cousins and older sister in their beach house they rented for the week. It was a little hard at first to totally relax and disconnect from the world but, once I did, it was much-needed. Honestly, I’ve been feeling semi-burned out lately and I’ve been needing to remind myself that it’s okay to take breaks at times.

Anyways, incase you missed these over on Instagram, I wanted to share a few of my latest outfits on repeat. I’m especially loving this swimsuit I wore at the beach, this striped button-down shirt I’ve shared multiple times on here, and these high-waisted pink pants that I’ll be able to wear year-round! All sizing info is below too, for reference. I am 5’7” and usually wear an XS or S.

Check back here on Thursday morning for my top picks of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I think this year is going to be the best yet as far as selections… I’ve got my eye on cardigans, booties, and flats mainly. It’s also the best time to stock up on your favorite shampoo/conditioner with the beauty set sales. Anyways, I’m excited for it although I know if you follow other blogs it can get old. If you don’t care about the sale, I totally get it! If you do, then I plan to be a great resource to help narrow down the best finds.

I’m excited because TJ doesn’t have any classes tonight so we’re going to have our favorite rice/lime bowls & maybe watch a good movie. I hope you all have a great Tuesday!

Chatting Sales and Raleigh Sunflowers

Happy July!

It’s kindof weird having a holiday on a Wednesday. It seems like a lot of people took off the entire week and headed to the beach! Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. We will hopefully be there toward the end of this week though and I am looking forward to it.

Yesterday we visited the beautiful sunflower fields in the center of Raleigh. The city of Raleigh changed up the location of the fields this year and they are actually right in the middle of Dorothea Dix Park. If you take Hunt Dr., drive past the soccer fields, turn right, and then take another right into that first parking lot, you’ll see them. They are seriously beautiful and I want to just set up a tent and live there for the next couple of weeks.

There is a SunFest planned for July 14th, 2-7pm, with food and live music too!

And now, let’s chat sales!

My personal favorite sale of the year is just around the corner… July 12th to be exact! If you’ve never shopped the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale before, I’ll give you a quick run-down. For a few weeks starting July 12th, Nordstrom significantly marks down brand new FALL clothing, shoes, accessories, home, everything. All of these items will go back to their regular price the first week of August.

This stuff sells out extremely fast so the best way to ensure you get the best items is by shopping during “early access” days. In order to access the sale early, you need to have a Nordstrom card. You don’t even have to technically use the card while shopping, you just have to have one. You can apply for one here.

SALE CALENDAR

July 12-19: Early Access for all cardmembers in stores and online
July 20-August 5: Sale is open to the public! No card needed.

Basically, this sale is unlike others because rather than marking down items at the end of a season, they are marked down before the fall season even begins! I usually go for cardigans, booties, sneakers… items I know I’ll get a lot of use out of in the fall/winter. Nordstrom released their Anniversary Sale Catalog a couple of weeks ago and it makes me so, so excited! I included a few of my favorite items below… lots of cozy textured sweaters, fall florals, midi length dresses and skirts, high quality booties, and more!

1 || Blouson Sleeve Cashmere Cardigan regularly $299, Jul 12-Aug 5 $199.90

Anyways, since we’re still 10 days away from the launch of the big sale, I’ve included a few July 4th summer sales below incase you’re in need of some summer finds or just in the mood to treat yo’ self. I’m actually going to be taking the rest of the week off from the blog for a change to get some behind-the-scenes stuff done and hopefully relax at the beach on Thursday/Friday.

I know we’re already a week into summer but I couldn’t get too far in without sharing my summer ‘bucket list’, a list of all the things I look forward to hopefully doing this season! Summer always goes by so quickly for some reason and it’ll be the first summer in our house! We won’t be traveling too much this summer, except maybe for one trip to visit some family in New England, but I’m looking forward to spending some time exploring our own area! I have a whole list of restaurants I want to try in Raleigh and I just love finding new things to do around here.

 1. There is a summer baseball team in our town (The Holly Springs Salamanders lol) and we have been wanting to go to a game one night! Basically for the snacks…
 2. I’d love to visit my Grandma up in Rhode Island one weekend, if possible. I’ve been going up there almost every summer since I was a kid and summer feels incomplete without visiting! Plus, it’s the perfect escape from the heat around August/Sept.
 3. Go to the pool more often and read some books! At the beginning of this year, I made a long list of books I wanted to read in 2018 and let’s just say I have a LONG way to go.
 4. Sell a house! Well, TJ will potentially sell a house. TJ has been taking a real estate class every week and will be able to help people find homes come September!
 5. Spend a few days at the beach relaxing! We will be visiting the beach for a couple of days next week and I am looking forward to being off my phone and soaking in the salty air!
 6. I’d love to paint our kitchen cabinets this summer… actually, asap. I’ve enjoyed doing smaller home projects in previous months but something about our kitchen just really intimidates me. However, it is something that is high up on my list of things to do this summer.
 7. Farmer’s Market Saturdays. There is nothing better than waking up on a Saturday, not rushing into any plans, and going down to our local farmer’s market with Colbie and TJ. There’s a food truck rodeo at our farmer’s market this weekend and you’ll probably find me there.
 8. Earlier this year I visited Charlottesville for a girls trip but I’d really love to go back and bring TJ with me this time! King Family Vineyards has polo matches on the weekends and you can bring your dog… sounds like the perfect weekend trip.
 9. Plan a surprise picnic. I have no idea where but I want to plan a total surprise picnic for TJ one day after work. 🙂 Maybe down the street at Bass Lake.
 10. Sign up for a new class… there are so many fun skills to learn and occasionally there will be classes at a local coffee shop at night such as hand lettering or yoga.

That’s about it! Add in trying a few new restaurants, maybe playing some tennis, and catching up with friends, that makes for a fairly full and happy summer!

I stopped by Cameron Village the other day and browsed through Palm Avenue’s Draper James collection. Speaking of Draper James, did you hear that there will be a Legally Blonde 3?! Ah, that makes me more happy than is probably normal. Anyways, if you’re ever wanting to shop the newest arrivals of Draper James, you always can at Palm Avenue in Cameron Village. And then you can go next door for drinks on the patio at Village Draft House. If there is a store that was made for the summertime, it is Palm Avenue. The white jeans I’m wearing in this post are also from there and how cute are these tassel earrings?! Palm Avenue also carries Trina Turk, Amanda Uprichard and so many more!

I hope you all have the best weekend! I’ll be sharing some good July 4th sales soon so check back if you’re in the mood for some shopping.

Xo, Shelby

Thank you to Cameron Village for sponsoring this post.

Blogging Q&A and Self-Employed Life

Yesterday was my 4 year blog anniversary so I thought I’d spend today answering some of your questions about blogging! A lot has changed in these last 4 years and I have learned SO much but am still learning every single day. Technology is always changing and this industry is always changing but I think this Q&A will help give you a little behind-the-scenes look at blogging and provide some insight on how it all works, especially if you’ve been wanting to start a blog of your own. Before I get started I want to say thank you to anyone who has ever visited this website or has followed me on Instagram. It means the world and the best part of this journey has been connecting with people who I never would have otherwise.

Q: How do you start and how did you know where to go for web-hosting/design?

A: Starting a blog can be a little frustrating because of the technical side of things being so new… at least for me it was. I didn’t understand what hosting meant, how to register for a domain, and all of this took me a while to understand. I will try and break it down into each part that you’ll want to consider. Each of these might also be an added cost depending on your preferences.

Blog Platform: You’ll want to choose which platform your blog will be based on whether that be WordPress (most popular), Blogger (Google’s blog platform), or Squarespace. This is where you will go to write/build your blog posts. Those are the 3 most popular that I’ve heard of. When I originally started my blog, I used Blogger, but overtime I decided to switch to WordPress. If you have no idea which to choose, I would say WordPress because it is the most popular and very customizable. I’ve heard Squarespace is very user-friendly too though and I’ve seen the most beautiful Squarespace designs.

Blog Hosting: You can think of web hosting kind of like paying rent for your blog to be housed on a computer where all of your website files are stored. I think hosting was free for Blogger but as your blog traffic grows, hosting will get pricier. I’ve always paid for my hosting through Go Daddy.

Domain Registration: When you register for a domain, you reserve that website name for a period of time on the internet and you’ll typically renew it each year. Currently, I pay for prettyinthepines.com, .org, .net, and .co. I don’t use the last three but I don’t want someone else buying those. Once you register for a domain, you’ll want to make sure your ‘owner information’ is private which is an even extra cost, otherwise people can find your address and personal stuff and that’s sketchy. Overall, this domain registration process isn’t a huge expense.

Blog Design: I think my first blog design was a template I purchased on Etsy. Another amazing website to buy templates is Pipdig.co. If you can find a web designer to design something completely custom, that’s always nice because you can get really personalized but it is the most expensive option. I’ve also noticed that a bunch of web designers usually also offer pre-made templates they’ve designed that you can personalize with a variety of color and layout options.

Basically, after you think of a name for your blog, you’ll want to do some research and make sure there isn’t already a blog with that name. Then, you’ll decide which platform to use, make sure hosting is set up, and purchase your domain (_____.com or ___.org, etc). To quickly answer the question of how I started, I basically became bff’s with google and looked up how to do everything. I didn’t have any friends who had blogs at the time and I was clueless so basically everything I learned was from googling. I still spend hours looking up youtube videos on how to do things with the camera, editing software, etc.

Q: How did you balance working full time and blogging first starting out?

A: I never really felt like I had balanced it well. I would come home from work and do blog stuff but I would also spend weekends working on the blog too because that was the only time I could spend focusing on the photography part of it. At the beginning, I didn’t blog as often and saw it strictly as a fun hobby. After about 1.5 years, I started to take it seriously as I saw it grow more. I still found joy in it and I still do every day but there is a level of dedication and self-discipline that is needed once you see it as more than a hobby. If you really find joy in it, I would recommend spending a couple of hours on it each night after work and then a larger chunk of time on the weekends. I will say that my social life isn’t what it used to be. I have to be strategic with my weekend time while also making sure that I find time to enjoy life. I’ll usually try and take photos either at the very end of the day or the very beginning so that I can enjoy a full Saturday and Sunday. Another way to balance is just take your camera wherever you go and implement more “real life” photos and experiences on your blog. I would also share my work outfits in the mornings sometimes just simply using my phone camera which made for quick and relatable content.

Q: What is your #1 tip of advice to grow your followers quickly?

A: I wish I knew the answer because I am still wondering that myself! My “follower count” grows slowly… not gonna lie. Sometimes it will go a full week without really seeing a change in the total follower count. The #1 way to gain followers quickly is for large brands to repost you… and you can’t really control that. You can try and share the brands you genuinely love in hopes of a repost but the other way that you might have a tiny bit more control over is… well, two things: supporting others and using semi-popular hashtags. I say semi-popular because if they are too popular, your photo might get lost. Experiment with different ones and check to see which ones have your image high on the “TOP” list. And try to use all 30 that you’re allowed to use!

I also believe that supporting others will always be a good idea. Make a list of 30 online friends/blogs you follow who are about your size, and go down that list each day making sure you say hello and encourage them! You get back what you give!

One other way to grow followers quickly is doing a giveaway but be careful when choosing how you implement this. There are a lot of “loop giveaways” or massive ones that can sometimes result in you having a bunch of followers who are solely there for the chance to win a prize and then you end up with a lot of unengaged unfollowers. I would personally stick to teaming up with a few other accounts that you genuinely love to follow!

Q: How do you edit your photos and what do you take your photos on?

A: I edit my photos using Adobe Lightroom and use a Canon 6D with either a 35mm f1.4 lens or a 16-35mm f2.8 lens (I just got this one a few weeks ago). It took me 4 years before I had all of these though (note: they are also ALL USED – Southeastern Camera in Raleigh is my go-to) and they are a huge investment so, if you are just starting out, know that you do NOT have to have these in order to be successful. I started with a Canon Rebel that I found on Groupon and a $125 lens (50mm 1.8). Also, I know of SO many successful bloggers who just use their phones
for photography. Don’t think “I can’t start ___ until I have _____”, trust me, I know that feeling. Make use of what you have already and overtime you’ll learn more about what you feel is important and smart to invest in. For editing, I created a “preset” on Lightroom and use that to keep the photos looking cohesive. I unsaturate certain colors to keep other colors more obvious and remove shadows/blacks while increasing contrast a tad, and adjust the exposure to be the highest without removing any detail (it’s usually under the 0).

Q: Do you blog full-time?

A: Since January, yes. You can read more about that here! I also wrote more about my experience so far at the bottom of this post. Do I think I will be doing this full-time in 2 years? I have no idea, probably not just this. I kind of feel like it will turn into something else I’ve been passionate about but I’m going to spend this year not worrying about the future so much and taking it day by day. Things I miss the most: a pay-check being the same amount each time and seeing my friends every day.

Q: How did you start with minimal finances and then pay for more features or pay someone to build your website knowing it would all pay off? What was that timeline like for you?

A: This is a good question because blogging can be very expensive. As it grows, it only becomes even more expensive but hopefully, if that is the case, it is making more money to make up for that cost.

When I started mine, I was thankful to not have any student debt at all. I also didn’t make a single penny off of it until about 1-1.5 years later. I would first say that if you are just starting, use a low-priced template for your design. You can find really pretty templates that can be personalized for a very reasonable price. I’d also recommend using your phone as much as possible… get the most for that money by taking advantage of the good camera and apps. Make a list of “must-haves” and figure out a savings plan. I still do that – most recently with my new camera lens and now with an online course I want to take. Reach out to smaller boutiques or local businesses and ask them if you can feature their clothing in exchange for promotion. After a while that won’t totally make sense as your social reach gets higher/grows in value larger than the cost of clothing but when you are just starting out, that is really the best way to go. Get to know other people in your area that are just starting out as well with their own businesses – they may be able to give you a discount or some other mutually beneficial agreement.

Basically, a majority of my income from my jobs after college went straight to my blog. I worked so that I could blog (and pay rent). It made me happy and I didn’t mind going into work to make money so that I could enjoy my hobbies, improve photography, etc. If you are passionate about it, it will pay off.

Q: How do you make money? Are there any specific affiliate programs you use?

A: Most bloggers make money in two main ways: affiliate income and brand partnerships (#sponsored). The affiliate network I use and love is rewardStyle and I make a very small commission when an item is purchased through links on my blog. It is very small and takes a lot of traffic to see a significant amount of money. I get paid every two weeks but it isn’t always the same amount.

The second way is sponsored partnerships with brands. This is when a company will pay you ____ in exchange for featuring ____ in a blog post or social post (or usually both). These can come to you or you can go after them yourself by applying to campaigns or emailing marketing teams. If you are reaching out yourself, make sure you email is really well written and stands out with a creative idea or else they will likely not respond. If a brand reaches out to you, make sure you only agree to the ones that make sense for you. For example, if a burger restaurant emails you and wants you to feature their new burger on the menu but you’re trying out a plant-based diet… stay true to who you are. Also, if a company wants to send you a $400 dress but you never pay over $100-150 for your own dresses, that would likely not benefit either parties.

Q: What were some things you wish you did sooner and things you wish you didn’t do at all?

A: This is a good question!

One thing I wish I did sooner: start. I wish I had started back in college when I was ordering Rent the Runway dresses for all of my sorority functions, sharing my workout ideas and healthy snacks in between classes, and just figuring out life. I would have really enjoyed that. Another thing, which is so random, but I wish I started selling used clothing on Poshmark from the very start. With fashion blogging in particular, you have so. much. clothing. Your closet is basically a boutique with new arrivals. I remember taking clothing to Plato’s Closet and getting like $15 in return. Poshmark is a great way to make some money on gently used clothing and I only recently started to use it. I also wish I didn’t spend as much money on clothing in the beginning. That gets expensive and I’m sure if I would have taken the time to reach out to more boutiques, I would have been able to collaborate more often. I’ve always bought the majority of the clothing I feature on here because I’m so picky and want this to be 100% my style, my selections.

I also wish I was more consistent with my posting at the very beginning. I think the first year was just me experimenting with it all. I probably would have seen more growth if I had been more consistent with posting on the blog and social media back then.

One other thing is that I wish I didn’t worry so much about what other people thought. In the beginning, I was terrified to post a photo because I thought people would judge me. They might have judged me but, overtime, I learned to not care. I mean, it can get awk getting pics taken of yourself all the time. People will always stare when we’re taking photos and now I just don’t worry about it and continue because ya girls gotta make some $.

Q: How long were you blogging before you really saw traction?

A: It took me about a year to feel like people actually followed it but I wasn’t as consistent with it when I first started. It took me about 2 years to see $. f you start and are consistent with it from the start, it will probably grow much more quickly. I would say posting at least once a day 5-6 times a week on social media, maybe posting a 2-3x on the blog each week (even once a week)… just creating enough good content that will make people want to continue to read and/or follow. There isn’t a rule book for any of this either so everyone has their own ways they’ve seen work best.

Q: How did you find loyal followers to help you stay motivated to keep going?

A: It just takes time, patience, and consistency. I know this sounds cliche but “nobody is you and that is your super power”. I feel like that is a tagline of someone I follow on IG. The only thing that sets you apart from everyone else in this saturated market is your individuality. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and share some of your life on Instagram Stories. There are still topics that I don’t feel 100% comfortable talking about online so it definitely takes time. You don’t need to share everything but I truly believe that Instagram Stories is the best way for people to really get to know bloggers these days. I think I connect most with people when I share what I am eating and doing and thinking more than what I’m wearing.

Q: I am a planner and it helps me to have a schedule in mind. What are some of your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks to get things like blog posts created and posted?

A: ME TOO. A few months before I took this thing full-time, I created a schedule breaking each day down by the hour and what I would be doing. I haven’t stuck to that schedule completely but it helped for a little bit! Believe it or not, I am still trying to figure out my schedule after 6 months. Overall, I try to post at least 6 days a week (I have to have an “off” day) on Instagram, every weekday on Facebook, 30 pins a day on Pinterest (I use Tailwind for this), and 3x a week on the website. Before each month starts, I make a list of at least 12 blog topics that would be good for that month. At the end of each week, I think about 6-7 Instagram photo ideas for the following week. For each Instagram photo, I think of a location and outfit. I also take time at the end of each month to analyze my growth for the previous month and to set goals for the next. Every blogger’s priorities are different and some decide to focus on one platform over the other. I have always kindof spread it out and spent a little bit of time on each.

I try to spend my mornings doing more administrative things like responding to emails, scheduling social media posts, writing. My afternoons are usually spent more creatively with brainstorming, doing research, reaching out to brands with ideas, planning photoshoots, ordering products to feature.

Q: How did you name your blog?

I wanted my blog to remind me of where I’m from which is where “the pines” came from. I also wanted it to have something to do with what I’d be sharing which is style, home decor, and all of the in between so I thought ‘pretty’ would sound good. I also thought the name ‘pretty in the pines’ reminded me of how beautiful the area I’m from is. Every time I flew back home whenever I visited somewhere else, I always thought NC was so lush and green. ‘Pretty in the Pines’ encompasses where I’m from and the beauty I find in each day.

The rest of this post is mainly geared toward those who own their own business or are hoping to one day. If not, it’ll just be a behind-the-scenes type post. If you’re a business owner, you’ll probably relate.

6 months ago, I was packing up my desk and saying bye to some of the best co-workers and friends I’d ever met. It wasn’t easy leaving but I knew that it was the right time to take the leap of faith. I had been blogging for 3.5 years and it started to make more sense financially to work on it full-time. It took about 1.5-2 years before I saw any money made from it, by the way, and I didn’t originally start it for money. Anyways, now that it has been exactly half a year, I wanted to share what I’ve learned since being self-employed. I’m still learning new things every single day.

I said goodbye to a 9-5 job and hello to a 24/7 job.

I think every business owner will say the same thing about working 24/7. While they might not physically be working 24/7, it’s safe to say that they are thinking about it 24/7. It’s hard not to when it is your livelihood. I would say that most days I work from 9am-11pm with a few scattered breaks in between for a walk with TJ/Colbie, lunch, and dinner. Work can look like a lot of things: responding to businesses or PR companies, writing blog copy, looking over contracts or creating contracts (TJ helps me with this one), managing and updating the website, scheduling social media posts on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram, sending in drafts for approval, applying for campaigns, creating the actual content/photography, planning locations of where to shoot, ordering products to share and review, responding to DM’s, editing photography, reviewing social media analytics, researching how on earth to grow your pageviews/IG reach/pinterest mo. reach, reminding myself that I need to save for taxes, and the list goes on. Somewhere in there I also have to shower/get ready. I 100% have not mastered work/life balance. When you start a business full-time, your mindset completely changes from when it once was a “hobby”. There is just so much more to think about.

There’s always room for improvement but it’s important to give yourself some credit and celebrate small wins.

I am hard on myself when it comes to my job. I’m constantly thinking about what I can do to be better at it and occasionally I’ll feel like I’m not doing enough or what I’m creating isn’t good enough. If an hour goes by and I haven’t “worked”, I feel lazy. While I do believe there is always room for improvement and room for learning and adjusting as technology changes, it is so important to remind yourself every now and then how far you’ve come. I accidentally opened up a media kit I created back in 2015 and it was so cool to see how much I’ve grown since then. When we were in the Bahamas last month, two girls from Baltimore came up to us in the resort and said that they followed me and then it happened again on the flight home. It blew my mind. It was just a good reminder for me to acknowledge how hard I’ve worked on it and stop being so hard on myself.

It’s also imperative to set aside time for me.

I’ve noticed that if I don’t make an effort to set aside time for me to just relax, watch a tv show, read a book, anything that is not work-related… I will get burned out. When I feel burned out, I cannot be creative. I’ve had to remind myself that it is OK and it is crucial for me to live my life outside of work in order for my work to have life… if that makes sense. A digital detox is like a gas station for creativity and it fills me up! I’m sure this is the same way for other business owners.

Don’t compare yourself to others.

Comparison.. It is the worst thing you can do for yourself and your business. I was looking at other people’s Instagram accounts about a month ago and found myself wondering how they grew so fast and how their photos had so many “likes” overnight… I know, comparing is the worst and I shouldn’t have been doing that. There will always be somebody who has more ‘followers’, more ‘likes’, etc. Supporting others’ in their dreams when they are organically growing is way healthier and fun than making comparisons. Plus, these days a lot of bloggers are taking desperate measures and buying fake likes which is really sad for this industry. Anyone can give their credit card number to a sketchy website to buy fake likes but not everyone can create content that people care to read while growing an authentic audience and some just cannot accept that. If it looks too good to be true, it might be! If you’re down about losing followers, remember that there’s also a lot of “bots” following and unfollowing you until you follow them back too. Just know that if you feel like you’re doing your best, be proud of yourself and remember the genuine community you’ve created. I value honesty and integrity so much and never want to associate my business with anything other than that.

Having a general plan for the day (before the day starts and even week) is key!

When you don’t have a boss, you can feel like you have the freedom to do anything with your time. I’ve realized that I have to create a to-do list with 3-4 top priorities the night before each day if I want to have a productive day. Preparation is key for productivity even if I just take 3 minutes the day before to write out my tasks.

Protect your business.

This one sounds kind of boring but it is something that is so important. A few months ago a friend of mine tagged me in a photo of a girl who had created a business called ‘Pretty in the Pines’ with basically the exact same logo. Unfortunately, it was in another country so we were limited in what could be done without paying thousands of dollars. Needless to say, I had to contact a lawyer for the first time and I learned a lot. The overall moral of the story is to protect your business (look into trademarking/copyrighting/etc) because there are others who will take your ideas whether it be a name or logo.

I think that is enough words for one post. If you’ve made it to the bottom of this then you must be really interested in blogging! I rarely write about this topic so it made for a lot of Q&A’s – thanks for your DM’s! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
