Sunday Six

Happy Sunday!

We just got back from a friend’s fiesta birthday party and I’m a little sad that the weekend is over already. This one flew by extra fast for some reason. Anyways, I’m sharing six things I’ve been loving lately, from skincare to books to clothing, starting with a cookbook that I picked up a couple of months ago but didn’t actually get into until recently.

100 Days of Real Food: Fast & Fabulous

I found this book while wandering aimlessly through Target one day and it’s written by a mom who wanted her and her family to eat less processed food. The recipes in this book look delicious, healthy, and most importantly, easy! I’ve always wanted to eat a diet full of real and familiar ingredients so this book is encouraging, especially seeing recipes with just three ingredients! I’m already planning to try cooking some of the recipes this weekend including the Roasted Summer Veggie Salad and the Feta and Avocado Pasta Salad.

Coola Sunless Tan Anti-Aging Face Serum

I’ve recently talked about an oil that I used as a sunless tanning face product but I’ve recently tried something even better! Each morning I’ve applied the Coola Sunless Tan Anti-Aging Face Serum on my face followed by the Tula Probiotic Gel Cream and I love it! The color is way more natural than what I am used to and the serum is so lightweight… I genuinely look forward to my morning skincare routine each day now. I’ve only been using it for one week but I’ll let you know my thoughts after about a month of using it. It’s definitely a splurge but it’s a brand you can trust when it comes to safe and non-toxic ingredients.

High-waisted Bikinis

With a few beach trips on the schedule for May, I’ve been browsing the swimwear sections online and I can’t seem to drift away from the high-waisted style. Urban Outfitters is also having a 25% off swimwear sale today. Here are a few I have my eye on:

<center>
</center>

Dark Chocolate Drizzled Sea Salt Popcorn

The other weekend my older sister visited and my family went camping. She had brought me a bag of her favorite popcorn that she kept from the holidays and since then it’s been our favorite dessert! Apparently it can be hard to find in stores when it’s not around the holidays but I discovered that you can order it on Amazon and my life is complete.

Sole Society Textured Clutch

I recently ordered this clutch that I plan on using all spring/summer long and I love the size, texture, and color which all make it such a versatile accessory. It’s not too bad of a price either. If you’re wanting something a bit less neutral, it also comes in a bright pink!

Tone it Up Daily Toning Moves

I feel like I’ve talked non-stop about Tone it Up lately but I recently started adding on the daily moves to my normal workouts each day and it makes such a difference and only takes about 15 extra minutes! These moves are free to see in the app too so anyone can have access to them! The Tone it Up community is releasing their 2018 Bikini Series Challenge next Monday which is an 8-week long workout challenge in case you’re interested in joining in! You can read more about it here.

I hope you had a great weekend! It’s kind of crazy that we’re about to head into the 5th month of the year after tomorrow. Tomorrow I’ll be sharing some monthly reflection and what I’m looking forward to most about May.

Personal Favorite Coffee Table Books

Ever feel like browsing Pinterest but not in the mood to stare at a screen? That’s where my “coffee table books” come in handy! Before all of these beautiful and inspiring images were circling around the internet, they were published in big books that usually would be found on someone’s coffee table or shelves. One of my favorite ways to style any space in a home is to use books whether that be on a mantle, on a tv console, shelves, or coffee and side tables. If you have any coffee table books in your own home, you know what I’m talking about. But have you ever actually taken the time to relax and read one? I’m not going to lie, I have not read every book that sits in my living room; however, there are a certain few that I repeatedly go back to for inspiration when I’m I need of a little escape. Seriously, if you can’t travel, the next best thing is one of these books! My favorites include topics ranging from home to style and food to travel.

I tried to narrow down some of my favorite coffee table books and, while it wasn’t easy, here are 5 that I open over and over again.

Blue and White Style

I think the name gives this one away but it’s a must have for anyone who is inspired by the colors blue and white. The interior and exterior inspo styles range from mediterranean to Moroccan to farmhouse and the pages are filled with the most inspiring, beautiful photos of blue/white decor from a variety of cultures along with some information written about the history of different styles and decor. Wallpapers, linens, bathtubs, staircases, tablescapes, florals, beachhouses, and outdoor living are just some of the ideas you’ll get inspired for with this book. I also love the pop of color the actual book gives for any area of your home!

Outside In

This book is a favorite because 1) it’s huge and has a beautiful cover 🙂 and 2) it’s pages are filled with architecture inspired by the outdoors. If you love gardens, you’ll want to add this book to your collection. This book also features many photos of interiors but they all have one thing in common: they overlook gardens or rivers or other beautiful landscapes. Your outdoor living Pinterest dreams in a book is basically what this is. The pages and photos are huge too so it’s a great conversation piece to add to your coffee table!

The Inspired Room

This book might be in my top 2. The Inspired Room is written by a home blogger and is actually very, very helpful when it comes to creating home spaces that you love! This book contains a lot of words v. photos compared to some of the other books but I love how inspiring it is while also teaching you how to create a “retreat” in your own home. Melissa, the author, talks about how you can make it so that your home feels like an actual retreat when you go on vacation and breaks the pages up into categories including entryways, living room/dining room, kitchen/pantry, and more; however, she gets you thinking differently and calls the spaces “first impressions” instead of entryway, “a place to gather” instead of dining/living room, “a space that nourishes” instead of kitchen and pantry, “a room to refresh” instead of bedrooms and bathrooms. This book will help you add purpose to each space in your house and I absolutely love it.

Love Real Food

This is not a typical “coffee table book” because it’s basically a cookbook but I absolutely love it! If you’re wanting to eat a more vegetarian diet, this book contains over 100 vegetarian favorites that will nourish the body and have you feeling great! The book is broken up into categories including: breakfasts, salads, soups, happy hour, dinners, sweet treats, and extras and most pages contain tips, cooking cheat sheets, and helpful recipe lists. If you love cooking or just are curious about more meatless options, this book is for you!

Timeless Style

I’m not sure why I am so inspired by large, glossy photos of people’s homes from all over but I love how this book is categorized by different styles including: glamour, authentic, chic, classic, natural, relaxed, and organic. Each photo is taken of an actual project the interior designer/author worked on so it features little write-ups about why they used what they did including farmhouses in Tennessee, beach house near Charleston, and many more of her most memorable projects. This book is huge and has a neutral soft gray cover making it a perfect decor piece for your own home!

My Spring Style Staple

<center>
</center>

If there is one staple in my closet I’ve worn the most these past few months, it’s this denim jacket from Urban Outfitters. I’ve worn it over dresses, with skirts, shorts, pants, white jeans, even leggings when traveling. It’s made by Levi’s, my favorite denim brand, and I’m wearing a size small for reference. Another item I’ve worn on repeat lately has been this pink tie front shirt! I absolutely love the quality and the loose, casual, laidback fit. We stopped by one of our favorite local lakes, Lake Crabtree, the other weekend before grabbing a bite to eat and it made me miss living over in that area!

You might have seen me share these shorts quite a few times on Instagram here and here but they’re just my favorite lately! The color is so unique and I love the ‘paper bag’ style. I also found these at UO… I can always count on them for having the most unique yet stylish finds.

I hope you all are having a great week! I feel like this one has flown by too quickly for me to get everything I need to get done! I have been using this notepad to organize my daily tasks though and it has made a difference.

The Best Home Decor Sale of the Year

There’s a big sale going on today that you’re going to LOVE! It’s Way Day… the biggest sale of the year for one of my favorite home decor retailers, Wayfair. Wayfair is pretty much where I bought our entire bedroom and so many other pieces in our home. It’s my go-to whenever I want to find the lowest price and the largest selection. Anyways, let’s talk about why this sale is so good. You’ll find the lowest prices of the year (even lower than Black Friday) and free shipping on everything with new deals going live every 6 hours. You can start decorating your spaces right this way.

To help narrow down some of the best finds, I thought I’d put together some of my favorite items, specifically for outdoor/patio living, since I’ve got spring/summer on the brain. Also, in case you missed it, we recently gave our patio/deck a huge makeover and you can watch the video of it here. Each item below is clickable and will bring you directly to the product.

<center>
</center>

*each item above is clickable

A few of my absolute favorites? This indoor/outdoor rug, this white wicker serving cart, and this swing chair with stand, although I already have one of those. Anyways, we’re also looking for an indoor dining table so I’ll have to check out all of the options because the sale is not just outdoor, it covers everything!

I hope you have a Happy Wednesday! This week is flying by. We went to Trader Joe’s last night for the first time in a while and stocked up on all of my favorite things. I tried their butternut squash ravioli last night and it was delicious. I’ve also started adding the ‘daily moves’ to my Tone it Up studio workouts and my abs are so sore but it feels so good. I’ve got to wear a swimsuit in a month so the motivation has finally kicked in.

My latest Target find handbag matches perfectly with the trench coat and, as for beauty, I’m taking it easy on my face as I’ve lately been experiencing bumps on my cheeks (I posted a photo on my IG stories). I’m actually thinking of switching up my foundation and using a mineral powder but I’ll keep you updated on what I do and the changes that (hopefully) come!

Camping Weekend + 5 Small Changes To Help The Environment

This past weekend was spent camping at the lake with my family and I suprised myself with how much I enjoyed every bit of it. We only live about 20 minutes down the road from several campgrounds at Jordan Lake so it was up in the air whether or not we would actually sleep in our tent both nights. About 5-ish years ago, my parents bought an airstream and have since been very into camping (really though, ‘glamping’). My older sister and my nephew and neice came down from Richmond and we all set up our tents, made s’mores each night, laid in our hammock, and enjoyed the outdoors. I brought my favorite tee I’ve had on repeat lately from Uniquities in Cameron Village because it’s super soft, casual, breathable, yet stylish. There’s nothing wrong with bringing a little style to the campsite. Uniquities is filled with casual chic pieces, the best quality denim, and so much more.. It’s honestly one of my favorite places to find items that perfectly fit my style.

Anyways, coincidentally yesterday was also Earth Day and had me thinking about a few changes that I can personally make to help protect our environment:

Buy more local food.

If you stop and think about how much of your food has traveled thousands of miles, that’s a lot of fuel and pollution whereas there are so many local farm stands, markets, and local-focused grocery stores that provide local produce. This is something I’d like to be more conscientious about whenever I go grocery shopping. There are really great farmer’s markets this time of year in most towns too! I also want to start making an effort in remembering to bring our reusable bags!

Recycle and reuse.

There is a huge, I mean monster, landfill near our house… it’s kindof disturbing driving by it almost everyday and it has made me really stop and think before I throw something away. I’ve been re-using every single cardboard box I get in the mail and plastic bottles, but I know there are more items I can recycle. This site is the best one I could find that organizes a guide including everything you can recycle at home.

Wash less.

This one I can easily get behind because I am the worst at laundry. I want to be more mindful about what I throw down the laundry shoot and only wash clothes that actually need to be washed because they stink. You can get a lot of wear out of your jeans without washing them.

Drive smart.

After doing some reading, I was surprised to hear how bad it is to leave your car on while not moving. Sitting in that Chick-fil-a drive through definitely hasn’t been the best for the environment. Moving forward, I’m going to make an effort to bypass drive-thru’s if possible, combine errands whenever I have to go pick up something so that I’m driving less overall, and shopping online more often (I think I can definitely do that one..). If I have to pick up somet items from Target, I’ll ask myself if I also need to go anywhere else on that trip (Post Office, etc.).

Choose beauty products wisely.

There are so many beauty products that contain chemicals that are potentially dangerous to the environment, including some that are in my bathroom cabinets for sure. I know it may not be completely realistic to instantly have only safe products but, as I get older, I will definitely be reading up on each skincare product and beauty product I try out. The same goes for cleaning products! As I shift more in this direction, I’ll be sure to share my favorite products with you all on here.

Those are just a few ways to make a small difference but if everyone made small moves, it would have a huge impact.

Anyways, our camping weekend really inspired me but it was nice to get back to our normal routine and clean sheets in our bed yesterday. If you want to shop my favorite t-shirt, be sure to stop by Uniquities in Cameron Village. They carry a bunch of my favorite brands including Free People, Sam Edelman, J Brand, and so much more.

Thanks for reading!

Style Diary 4.18.18

Outfit:

Off the Shoulder Bardot Stripe Midi Dress || Steve Madden Apolo Wedge Sandal || Colorblocked Straw Rancher Hat

Yesterday’s beautiful weather called for an equally as beautiful breezy striped dress to match and my favorite go-to espadrille wedges. A few other striped favorites of mine include this wide-leg jumpsuit and this flowy maxi dress. I don’t think I could ever get tired of blue and white stripes.

We ended the day with a long walk with Colbie and a romantic Chick-fil-A date. As cheesy as it sounds, I love this season of my life and I think the nice spring weather makes me appreciate every little thing I have that much more.

5 Reasons Why You’ll Want This Spring Skirt

The other day I walked into a brand new store carrying all of my favorite brands and, if I wasn’t in Raleigh, I would have thought I was in a casual-chic coastal city stocking up for a day at the beach. If you’re in the Raleigh area, you’ve got to stop by the newest South Moon Under! If your style is anything like mine, it’ll make all of your fashion dreams come true. I also wanted to become bff’s with every person who worked there. Anyways, I found a few cute pieces, one of them being this stretchy high-waisted mini skirt that I loved so much, I picked it up in two colors.

After wearing mine a few times, I had to share it with you! These are 5 reasons you’ll love this little skirt this season (and the next, and the next…).

1 || The material is so comfortable and stretchy yet still high quality. It almost has panels that hold everything together but the material is the comfiest I’ve worn in a skirt. Be sure to size up though! I’m wearing a US 4 in these.

2 || It comes in MANY colors. I chose two of the more basic/neutral colors but this skirt actually comes in a huge variety of colors, prints, even different fabrics. You can shop more of the options online here

3 || It’s not just a spring skirt but this thing will definitely be worn all 4 seasons for me. I can picture it in the fall with an extra long cardigan, booties, and a tucked-in turtleneck.

4 || Free People can get to be pricey but this skirt is $50 which, for me, is a decent price for something you may get a lot of wear out of.

5 || Not only is it affordable and comfortable, but it looks good with almost everything! Tees, floral blouses, chunky sweaters, you name it.

I couldn’t leave without picking up one of my favorite Capri Blue candles!

The weekend ended too soon! We spent nearly every hour outside and loved it. Incase you haven’t seen the video on our outdoor space transformation, you can watch it here!

Designing Our Outdoor Space: Part 2

I’m going to warn you all that this post is a little out of the norm in that it is pretty informative when it gets down to the patio details. If you don’t care too much about how we built our patio, you can scroll on down to the end where I talk about all of our decor details, my favorite part! If you’re more into visuals/video, you can watch our youtube video on our outdoor space here.

Outdoor Decor:

Let’s start with the deck because the deck was definitely less involved in comparison to the patio. Less involved but definitely not less time consuming. When we first moved into our house about 4 months ago, our deck was dark brown, dirty, and definitely needed a makeover. There is nothing wrong with brown decks (that’s what most decks are) but ours was covered in dirt, stained really uneven, and I wanted it to feel more inviting, almost like what you’d see at a little chic bohemian hotel. Since this is our first house with actual space outside, I knew I wanted to take advantage of our backyard area!

The easiest way to start that transformation was to stain the deck! If you go to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s, you can ask for solid color wood stain in pretty much any shade you want. Pick up the brochure available where the stain is and you can browse all of the colors available. I wanted our privacy wall to really pop so I decided to paint the trim/border ‘pure white’ and the rest of it (along with the floor), ‘light lead’, a light-medium gray color. The railings were stained white as well and the overall painting process took much longer than I originally planned. We went through a period of rain every other day so it was challenging to try and plan time to be out there working on it. The entire painting process took about two weeks. For the lattice and in between the wall boards, I’d recommend using a small sponge brush to get into the smaller crevices. For everything else, we just used a variety of larger brushes.

TJ was the mind behind the patio while I focused on the deck.

Step-by-Step Patio Tutorial

When we first bought our house, there was a small patio area that was right off of the deck. It was made up of, what looked like, quarry stone. They were all shapes, sizes, and heights causing rain to pool. We knew we wanted to revamp the outdoor space with a new patio, so we started a DIY project to make it our own.

Step 1

The first step was to dig up all of the current stones. We were able to repurpose them into a retaining wall near a natural area a corner of the yard. We got pretty lucky because, even though the stones were different sizes, they were all set at around the same depth.  Once all of the stones were up, we started the leveling process. I used a garden rake to grade the surface and dug out areas where there was excess dirt. There were areas that had to be shaped to make the perimeter even. Once the area was flat, we began laying the base.

Step 2

Once we had the ground level we began laying paver base. You also have an option to lay a weed barrier, but we decided to skip this step. We felt the paver base, level sand, and pavers would keep those weeds away. We used about 45 bags of paver base to cover an area of 14’x9’ and a depth of 3 inches. Once the base was put down and spread, we used a tamp to set the base so it would not shift.

Step 3

Once the paver base was set, the next step was to lay leveling sand so we had a flat surface for the actual pavers. To ensure that the sand was level, even with a few dips and mounds that may occur with the paver base, we used 3 one inch thick pieces of PVC pipe. The pipes were laid parallel and we used a small section of 2×4 to spread the sand. This ensured that the sand was always as high as the PVC pipes.

Step 4

With leveling sand down, it was time to lay the pavers. There were a lot of different patterns that we explored, but ended up going with a classic 2×2 style. We chose gray 16”x8” pavers and mix and matched the them horizontally and vertically. There were a few areas where you may need to add sand to keep the pavers level. Try to lay the pavers all at once to keep any weather issues to a minimum.

Step 5

The last step for the patio was to add polymer sand to keep the pavers in place and deter weed growth. Follow the instructions by spreading evenly with broom into the cracks between the pavers. Once spread, ensure all excess if swept off of the pavers to avoid staining. After all excess is removed, spray with water to set the sand. Stay off the pavers for at least 24 hours.

-TJ

I’ve spent more time out on our deck in the past couple of weeks than we have ever and we’ve already hosted a dinner for our family. While this house definitely won’t be our forever home, we have enjoyed making it our own and learning a lot along the way! If you have any more questions about the patio, feel free to email me or leave a comment below.

As for our decor, you can shop most of that on my outdoor page or you can scroll through the lookbook below.

I hope you all have a great Thursday! The weather is absolutely beautiful so we’re going to end our day with a long walk to the park followed by some wine on the patio! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog. It means the world. My hope is that I can be a resource when it comes to style, whether it’s putting together an outfit or fixing up a space in your home. I’ve loved sharing our home experiences with you to show you that you don’t have to hire a ton of contractors to do work on your house to make a big difference in your space. It just takes some inspiration, research, and about 20 trips to the store. We’re trying to decide if we should tackle the kitchen or office next?!

The Time To Buy Denim

<center>
</center>

My favorite sale for spring is here! My go-to for denim has always been Shopbop. Why? Shopbop carries my favorite brands like Levi’s, Madewell, BlankNYC, Free People, and so much more plus they’re owned by Amazon so the shipping is super fast! I normally have my items in 2-3 days once I order. Anyways, everything is 20% off today (if you order less than $500) and if you’re spending the big bucks or splitting w/ a friend (over $500), you’ll get 25% off everything with the code EVENT18.

A lot of what is sold here can actually be very pricey so I definitely stick to my go-to brands when I’m shopping although, if you’re looking for anything designer, they will definitely have what you’re looking for.

TOP 3 RECOMMENDED:

Light Wash Denim Shorts (wearing size 25)

Medium Wash High Rise Denim (wearing size 26)

Mile High Ankle Skinny Jeans (in white/wearing 26)

Denim Overall Dress (wearing 25/if your size is sold out, you can also find it here)

One other brand that I would highly recommend taking advantage of during this sale is Beyond Yoga. Beyond Yoga has, by far, the most comfortable leggings I’ve ever worn and, while they are not the cheapest, you can get 20% off with the code EVENT18. They feel like you’re wearing butter or something they are so soft and they have a super high-waisted fit. I could honestly sleep, work, run in them, everything.

I’m strongly considering ordering the cropped version today. Anyways, I wanted to share these all with you before sizes sell out. I’m hoping to have a video up later tonight so that’s what I’ll be working on today.
