The Perfect Coat To Dress Things Up

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent more time than usual at home over the past couple of weeks. It’s been freezing all over the east coast (can’t imagine how people up north are feeling like my grandma in RI!) and I’ve honestly been hibernating at home in my sweatpants and fuzzy pullover whenever possible. It’s been perfect for indoor home projects though. This weekend we finished painting our bedroom walls (including our DIY shiplap accent wall – tutorial coming soon). We just have to add some crown molding to the corners and the walls will be done. Although now I want to add shiplap to a few more walls in the house. I just love the character it adds!

Anyways, we’re only a few weeks into winter which means we definitely have more cold days ahead. You might also have some events on the calendar where you have to dress up a bit. I found this textured grey coat under $90 when I was looking for a coat to wear over my dress for an event and love it! I like to have a more dressy coat on hand instead of layering my more causal puffy ski-like jackets over everything. I really needed this for a wedding last weekend and although it didn’t come in time for us to leave, I wanted to share it with a more casual look today.  The coat adds both warmth and style to any outfit and is available in RegularCurve, Petite, and Tall. I ordered the Tall and I’m almost 5’7’’ for reference. In these photos, I’m wearing my number one favorite jeans of 2017, the Levi’s ‘Mile High’ Skinnies.

I wanted to say thank you for the comments and messages relating to my most previous post. Hearing that it inspired some of you means a lot! If you have any questions about anything, feel free to email me at hello@prettyinthepines.com.

Hope y’all have a great Monday! I’m hoping I can make it to the gym in the AM for a change this week.

xo, Shelby

New Life Update for the New Year

Back when TJ and I arrived home from our honeymoon in June last year, I felt a sense of relief. Our wedding was everything we ever dreamed of (and more) but it also took hours each week to plan each detail. On top of planning our wedding, I was planning wedding blog content. We had pressed pause on a few things in our lives in order to contribute funds to our wedding (ex: we couldn’t buy a house), I had to work hard on my blog to pay for that extra wedding vendor I “had” to have, and work hard at my regular day job to keep a steady income. Each evening and weekend was either spent planning the wedding or working on the blog. When we arrived back from the honeymoon, our next challenge was going to be saving for and buying our first house. Our apartment rent was a lot and we felt like we were wasting money for years. We wanted our dog to have a yard. We wanted to finally have space for storage. TJ wanted grass to cut and a garage to put all of our 2 tools in. Jk, we now have like 20 tools and we also need to buy stock in Lowe’s.

If you didn’t know, I started my job back in November of 2016 at a company (Invisalign) where I met some of the best people I’ve ever met. We quickly became close friends, they even handed out programs at my wedding, and they just made me excited (for once) to wake up and go into an office each day. I genuinely looked forward to going to work every single day because of my work friends. The company’s work environment was the best. It took me a long time to find a company I absolutely loved after having a few different jobs where I felt less than satisfied. This was IT. I was beyond happy. Plus, I’d have a lot of paid vacation days for our wedding/honeymoon in 2017.

Now let’s rewind and go back to June 25th, 2014. I wake up, get ready to go to a friend’s bridal shower, put on a super cute outfit, I get to the bridal shower and people are asking me where my top and skirt are from. This wasn’t the first time people asked me for my outfit details. In fact, in the weeks leading up to this, my dad and I were both talking about starting blogs. His would be about camping/grilling/dad things. Mine would be about…. Well, anything that interested me – fashion, fitness, home decor, my dog. I specifically remember asking him if it would be “dumb” if I created a fashion based blog. He said “no” so then I felt reassured that it was okay for me to move forward. My dad is a pretty cool guy so if he says something is cool, it’s cool, okay? He knew I was creative enough, and business-minded enough to follow through with it. Plus, I had just heard I didn’t get into dental school so I had nothing to lose (except a lot of my time but I didn’t mind). I was excited for something creative, new, and with endless opportunities. I had also just purchased my first “real” camera… a DSLR Canon Rebel. Instead of forcing my friends to take pics with me on trips, I now had never-ending ideas of what to take photos of… food, clothes, my apartment, travel, my dog, life, etc.

So, I came back from that bridal shower on June 25th, 2014 and now that I had thought of a name (Pretty in the Pines), I created an account on BlogSpot, asked TJ to photograph my outfit, and then PITP was born in all of it’s glory. LOL, see below pic of what it looked like. Legit, right?

Was this at the apartment’s pool? Yes. Was he laying on the ground? Yes.

I posted about fitness a lot, weird recipes that I liked, outfits, party decor, and more. For over a year, I created blog posts just because I wanted to. I didn’t get paid. But this blog actually gave me LIFE. I was fine going to my oral surgery job and taking bloody gauze out of teenager’s mouths even though I knew I wasn’t going to apply again for dental school, because it was making enough money for me to invest in my passions. Eventually, the bloody gauze/oral surgery got old and I moved on to another pharmaceutical company. If you’ve ever worked for pharmaceutical companies, you know that there is always a possibility of them cutting your program and laying off everyone. That happened to me. Twice. My blog was still not making money but I still loved it. Thank God for TJ who quickly picked up photography as a skill, by the way. I kept going, working on my blog not knowing where it would take me, but also started seeing emails coming in from brands offering me money to create content for them. One company asked us to go to the Outer Banks for a week and create marketing content AND get paid for it. I was like “free vacation? WHAT? Yeah!!”. While that trip was a blast, it was NOT a vacation. It was a lot of hard work. That week I learned that blogging is not just blogging. It is creative directing/planning, photographing, filming, social media marketing, styling, editing, producing, responding to emails from brands and readers, reaching out to businesses (literally writing a sales email), reading through contracts, negotiating, branding, accounting, and more. We had to create multiple blog posts, capture great images of each thing we did, each restaurant we went to, all while continuing to put up posts while we were there. Sounds fun and it was fun but all I am saying is that it is WORK. In fact, since we started the blog, we haven’t taken a “vacation”. We took a few days in St. Lucia to relax but a lot of the time was spent working.

Let’s fast forward to when we arrived back from our honeymoon. TJ and I had talked about the possibility of my blog becoming a full-time job several times but with our wedding on the horizon, it was NOT in the cards. Especially since I wanted our wedding to be in Charleston. When that was over, it was still not in the cards. We needed to save for a house. We needed to have my steady income in order to qualify for a certain amount for a loan, blah, blah all of that stuff. We eventually found our house and a few days after we closed, I put in my 3 weeks notice at my job. This was probably the hardest decision I ever made in my entire life. After finally finding a company I absolutely loved with the best managers in the world, I was going to leave it along with the people I grew to love, and focus on my own business. The next three weeks were hard, some days I asked myself “did I make the wrong decision?”, “is it too late to just say JK nevermind”, “are my work friends and I going to stay friends”? And I received questions on repeat like “how does your blog even make money”, “does TJ make enough/is he okay with it” (of course he is… we are married and talk about financial things). My blog income began to reach my regular income. My parents actually encouraged me to make the change which was very important to me. My mom, the one who always told me how to fix up my resume, the one who told me to never leave a job under one year, the VP of HR, encouraged me to become an entrepreneur. That meant a lot to me.

So, on December 21st, 2017, I drove to my job one last time. I wasn’t going to tell anyone and I certainly was not going to make some big announcement on my blog which would only add more pressure to me to be successful but here we are. This was on my heart and needed to be written.

Incase you want to read a good post about the truth about blogging, read this. It is much less glamorous than it sounds. I’ll be working way more than 40 hrs a week. I will have to learn how to prioritize, focus, and learn to not leave my office every 30 minutes for a snack. I am really excited though because although I am not 100% sure where this blog will go from here, I know that I am finally working for myself… a dream that I always had. There were so many jobs I was rejected for after college but I am so thankful those never worked out.

I guess I’m just writing this all out so that 1) I can be more transparent, “real” about my life and 2) if you have a passion, work hard and stay consistent, good things will happen. I remember graduating from college and seeing everyone’s Facebook status say “I’m so excited to officially announce that I have accepted ____” or “have been accepted to ___ school” while I was getting “no” after “no” for any job or school I applied for. Turns out, I wasn’t meant to go to dental school. I wasn’t meant to be in pharmaceutical sales. If something isn’t working out for you, you can either keep trying (if you’re really passionate about it), or you can sit back and take a look at WHY you are wanting that job or that opportunity. If the why has anything to do with just financial reasons or status reasons you should probably think more about what it is you want to do.

You can expect new posts here every M, W, F until I get my schedule/routine down. Hope you’ll continue to visit! Thank you so much for taking the time to read any of my posts over the past 3.5 years.

Keeping Comfy Chic

<center>
</center>

The majority of the outfits you’ll see me wearing on Instagram and on this site can be described as c o m f y! It’s important for me to keep it chic though and not look like a total mess in my sweatpants, oversized sweaters, and sneakers. A few key things I like to remember when going for the comfy, chic look: 1) find a good pair of slide-on sneakers (the lack of laces makes them more “put together” and less overall bulky), 2) find joggers that fit! (I’ve ordered so many pairs of joggers that looked more like men’s sweatpants because they just didn’t have that right fit), and 3) when in doubt, tuck it in (front tuck your sweaters/tees/etc).

I’ve been loving the deep blue/green color of these satin joggers (wearing XS) and can see these being a year-round piece in my closet. I’ll dress them up with heels in the spring and a floral top but, for now, I wore them with a neutral, grey textured (under $50) off shoulder sweater (also can’t wait to wear this through spring!).

Happy Wednesday!

Best of the Year: Make-up, Hair, Skin

First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR! I love New Years. I think it’s the thinker and dreamer in me – thinking back on the previous year, reflecting on what went well/what didn’t, thinking forward to the new year and a fresh start. I just love to think, plan, and then put things into action. This year brings some big changes that I’ll get into later on but I hope everyone has a good start to 2018! For now, grab some coffee and scroll down for another ‘Best of 2017’ round-up! Incase you missed the previous ‘Best of 2017’ posts, you can read my Top Denim and Top Activewear posts.

Today, I’m talking all about beauty! I’ve tried some of the best skincare, hair, and make-up products over the past year and didn’t want to go into the new year without sharing these! All of these I’ll be continuing to use but I’d love to hear if you have a favorite beauty product you’ve found over the year.

SKINCARE

SELF-TANNER: For the body, my #1 favorite self-tanner has been St. Tropez Express Tanning Mouse. When applying with the mitt (crucial step), it results in the most natural looking healthy glow! For my face, my newest obsession is these rejuvenating self-tanning drops. I normally use this in the morning and mix it in with my moisturizer. A little goes a LONG way so be sure you only use 2-3 drops each time. This is probably in my top 5 beauty products of the entire year.

MOISTURIZER: I’ve tried many moisturizers over the course of the past year but there are three that have really impressed me. The top 3: Darphin’s Hydraskin Gel Cream, It Cosmetic’s Secret Sauce, and TULA’s Hydrating Day and Night Cream. If I had to choose ONE out of all three, I’d probably say this one due to it being slightly less expensive but still amazing.

CLEANSERThis Ocean Cleanser has been my favorite by far. It isn’t drying, it is made all natural ingredients, and keeps my skin feeling refreshed! Actually, one of my newest beauty brands I’ve discovered over the year is OSEA . However, if you’re looking for something great but a little less expensive, I’d recommend using this cleanser. During the winter when my skin becomes more dry, I’ve just been cleansing my face with coconut oil and a washcloth! The coconut oil leaves my skin feeling moisturized for a long time.

DEODORANT: I’ve mentioned this deodorant several times before but I spent a long time looking for a natural, non-toxic deodorant that actually works and was thrilled when I tried out this one! It smells so good, is safe to use, and actually keeps me smelling fresh, even after a work-out. I’ve only tried out the Vanilla and Coconut scent but they have many to choose from.

EYE CREAMMy favorite I’ve tried over the past year is IT Cosmetics’ ‘Confidence In An Eye Cream‘ although it is more pricey than I’d like. I’m currently on the search for something that works better but is closer to $20 or under. I’m not sure if that exists but I’ll let you know if I find one!

BODY SCRUB: This sugar scrub leaves my skin feeling moisturized, smooth, and it smells amazing. It’s super affordable too!

HAIR

SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER, LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER || I’ve loved using this shampoo, followed by this restorative conditioner and this leave-in conditioner. I discovered this conditioner at the very beginning of the year and, while it is not cheap, it is what my hair needed to come back to life.

DRY SHAMPOO: Since my hair is so dark, a lot of dry shampoos turn my hair white but I’ve really liked using this dry shampoo to get my hair feeling fresh and more voluminous. In fact, I even use dry shampoo right after I use regular shampoo to give my hair more volume.

HEAT PROTECTANTThis is one of my most important steps when doing my hair as I am frequently using a curling iron. I’ve found that my curls not only stay protected when I use this heat protectant but my curls hold better too and have less frizz! I spray it each time before I curl my hair (on dry hair).

SPLIT END TREATMENTSometimes I’ll wake up and my ends will be frayed, frizzy, and just not healthy looking, especially before I had my hair cut recently. While the cut made a huge difference, I still have those mornings when my hair ends look frizzy. I like to apply this split end treatment on the very ends to help make them come back to life.

CURLING IRON & TEXTURIZING SPRAYFor the majority of this year, I’ve been using the 1” Bio Ionic Curling Iron and love it! The real key though is using texturing spray afterwards. There are two texturizing sprays I’d 100% recommend for all hair types: THIS or THIS. This one is newest but I’m finding it really hard to find in stock online. This one also works amazing though.

MAKE-UP

FOUNDATION and FOUNDATION BRUSHThe best, most natural feeling foundation that also provides coverage and SPF, is this. I wear the shade ‘light beige‘. For the brush, I’ve tried looking everywhere for this but it looks like it was a limited edition brush for breast cancer (pink and in the shape of a heart called ‘Love is the Foundation’). The closest I could find to it was this one.

EYESHADOW COLORThis eyeshadow in ‘satin taupe‘ is the perfect neutral for all occasions. I use it on a regular basis and just use more or less depending on the look I’m going for. I apply it in the crease and the outer area over top of a very natural looking tan base color.

MASCARA, EYE-LINER, and BROWS: The best mascara and liquid eye-liner I’ve used all year are both by It Cosmetics. For a pencil eye-liner, I’ve used this Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil in ‘Onyx’. The Superhero mascara and eyeliner both work wonders for my eyes and I have yet to find something better! For my brows, I’ve been applying this brow powder using this Beautifully Precise Dual-Sided Eyebrow Brush (only $5!)!

CONCEALERMy #1 biggest problem area is my under-eye circles. No matter how much sleep I get, I will always have dark under-eye areas so my most important make-up step is concealer. I’ve been using this Bye Bye Under Eye concealer first and then going over it with Tarte’s Shape Tape in ‘Light’. This is the best combo I’ve found to work!

LIP COLOR: My most worn lip color of the entire year has been Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in ‘Rapture’. My most worn lighter shade of lipstick has been MAC ‘Creme Cup’. Both are beautiful and non-drying!

BLUSH and BLUSH BRUSHI’ve been using this blush in ‘Sweet Cheeks’ all year and have applied it using this brush. The blush has highlighter in it so it saves an extra step. I can’t tell you how many compliments I’ve received from this blush.

BEST OVERALL BEAUTY PRODUCT: Coconut Oil – I’ve used this in place of make-up remover, even cleanser sometimes, lip-moisturizer, body oil, and just an overall moisturizer. You can’t beat the value of coconut oil!

That’s it! A few items I’m looking forward to trying this year: a silk pillowcase, this No More Baggage undereye gel, this Caviar Stick Eye Color, and some new liquid lip colors.

Thanks for stopping by to read! If you follow me on Instagram (@prettyinthepines), be on the lookout for a fitness giveaway tonight at 8pm EST.

Best of 2017: Activewear

In the spirit of it almost being the new year, I wanted to continue with my ‘Best of 2017’ posts and today focus on fitness and activewear. The first half of the year was spent day after day in the gym leading up to our wedding day and then, after that, I haven’t quite set back into a routine (by not quite, I mean literally none what so ever). Now that we’ve settled into our new house more, I’m excited to get back into the groove and on track with a workout plan for not only my physical health but mental health too! The gym we’re members of is opening up a new location right down the road from us so now I really won’t have any excuse not to spend time there. Scroll below to see which leggings won #1 in my eyes, which sneakers I loved the most, water bottle, etc.

Leggings

TOP 4:

#4: Outdoor Voices: Outdoor Voices is one of my newest favorite activewear brands this year, mainly because of the wide variety of unique colors and styles they offer. You won’t find these colors anywhere else and you also know you’re getting quality clothing that’ll last.

#3: ZellaZella is a brand that is exclusive to Nordstrom but is surprisingly more affordable than many activewear brands. You can find their most popular “Live In Leggings” for just $54 (and they have over 3,200 reviews with 5 stars!). The pair I’m wearing in this post (shown above) is their High Waisted Moto Legging and I LOVE the fit.

#2: Beyond Yoga: It was hard to decide between my #1 and my #2 picks because they are both amazingly comfortable but these Beyond Yoga leggings are, by far, the softest pair of workout leggings. I even slept in them a few times because I wanted to wake up ready to go and they even were comfortable enough for that. They (of course) have a high waisted fit, are super stretchy, and I give them an A+ in comfort and style!

#1: Onzie: My number one top pair of workout leggings in 2017 goes to Onzie! The mesh and spandex material makes these the most practical for a sweaty workout but they’re also the most comfortable pair I own. The high waisted band makes you already feel like you have a stronger core before you even get to the gym. They come in capris and full pants but, for the summer, I love the capris.

and a few other categories…

Best Water Bottle: My BKR water bottle is definitely the most pricey water bottle I’ve owned, but I’m telling you, I think that helps ensure it’s always by my side filled with water. This water bottle is unique because, instead of my regular Nalgene bottles being plastic, this one is made of glass and protected by a rubbery layer of material. I have the 32 oz. and I always try to drink at least two/day or else my skin gets gross.

Best Overall Sneakers: Nike Air Max Zoom All Outthese are the most comfortable pair I’ve found over the past year and have 5 stars based on customer reviews! I like to wait until the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in July/August to stock up on a new pair and these were the first thing I bought during the sale this year.

Favorite Work-Out: My favorite workout (other than the Kayla Itsines SWEAT app) was honestly just walking! I saw amazing results before our wedding just from walking on the treadmill at a huge incline. I’m excited to start back next week (when our new gym opens)! Plus, I love walking because you can do other things like watch videos, etc.

Best Sports Bra: anything by Beyond Yoga but specifically this one

Work-Out Must Have: Bluetooth Headphones. You can find a pretty good pair for under $30 on Amazon but I can’t live without these!

Best Natural Deodorant: I’ve only been using this brand for the past few months but I LOVE IT and can’t wait to continue using it throughout 2018. It took me a while to find a natural-based deodorant that actually worked and I absolutely love this stuff, especially in the Coconut and Vanilla.

Best Outerwear: THIS!!! I love how it zips up so you can wear it out in the cold on the way to the gym then easily take it off once you’re hot. Seriously the best investment piece.

Well, that was fun. Luckily, one of my favorite retailers for activewear is having a huge end of year sale right now! Shopbop is offering an extra 25% off all their sale items making it possible to get a bunch of great brands up to 75% off using the code JOY25! It ends tomorrow though, so don’t wait! If you have any activewear favorites, please let me know because I would love to try them out! I’m hoping to add more ‘wellness’ content into my posts for the new year since that has always been a passion of mine.

Best of 2017: TOP 5 Denim

This time of year I always tend to look back at the best moments of the year including favorite trips we’ve taken, biggest life events that occurred, and other favorite times. Since this blog is life and style focused site, I wanted to also take a moment and look back at some of the best items that were added to my closet. Specifically, denim. This year I learned to appreciate good denim and to stop wasting my money on denim that didn’t fit 100% perfectly. Splurging on a few pairs of well-made, but comfortable, denim that I could re-create multiple outfits with was key. Luckily, my work is jeans-friendly and I wear some of these (non-distressed) to my office on repeat. Scroll through to see which pairs of denim have lived up to my standards and also which pairs are next on my list to try for 2018!

Let’s do this music-video countdown style and start from the bottom.

PAIR #5: Levi’s 721 Skinny

These jeans (in medium AND dark) rank on my list of favorite denim but definitely not #1… mainly due to the dark shade’s comfort level. For some reason, the darker wash is not as stretchy as the medium wash but, otherwise, they’re a great pair! You’ve probably seen several style bloggers wear these this fall (in both medium AND dark) and for good reason… they are fairly affordable and under $100! You can always count on Levi’s for quality. I love having a good distressed pair for the weekends and these are perfect for that, especially the lighter wash because of their stretchiness. For sizing, these run true to size.

PAIR #4: Agolde Vintage Parker Denim

Although these are denim shorts and not pants, I had to include them on the list for 2017 best of denim. I love the high-waisted fit, the length (not overly short), and the color options! I wore these over and over again on my blog this past summer and fall and hope to see them continue to be available over the next year (or maybe even come out with more washes). I honestly wore mine every single weekend with a t-shirt and sometimes even dressed them up with a blazer. For sizing, I would order one size smaller than your usual size.

PAIR #3: Mott and Bow High Rise Skinny

Mott and Bow became one of my favorite brands late last year and continuously impresses me with their comfort and styles. There is something about this fit that makes you feel like your legs are skinny, strong, and a mile long. Plus, these are the epitome of comfort with their stretchiness. I have a dark wash pair and now a black pair as well. I’m just waiting until they come out with a white pair! Hopefully next year. For sizing, these run true to size.

PAIR #2: Topshop MOTO Raw Hem Straight Leg

One of my most worn pairs of denim of the year are these Topshop Raw Hem Straight Leg jeans. They used to have these in stock at Nordstrom but now it seems you can only find multiple sizes directly through Topshop. These are a very high-waisted, not as stretchy, but extremely flattering pair of jeans. I’ll post some photos below of my wearing them but I’ve worn these so many times that I’m considering buying a second pair in a darker wash!

PAIR #1: Levi’s Mile High Skinny Jeans

Just the name of these jeans alone makes me love them. For the longest time, I’ve been a fan of anything high-waisted because of how slimming the fit is and these jeans made it to my #1 spot this year because of that. I originally ordered only the dark wash but, since then, I ordered the medium wash as well and they’re just as impressive! I love that these jeans are also under $100, come in a variety of colors, and are true “skinny” towards the bottom (no bulkiness or extra fabric). They also have the perfect amount of stretch keeping their shape but also being comfortable for long periods of time. Taking the price tag, comfort, style, and quality all into consideration, this pair gets the gold medal for 2017! For sizing, these run true to size.

I would love to know if you all have tried any of these or if you have any other denim brands you absolutely love!

Happy Friday and I hope everyone has a great weekend before Christmas!

Tips to Make Your Next Move Easier

Oh, the joys of the moving process! Each time I’ve moved, I have been reminded by how daunting the entire process can be, from the planning, packing, moving, unpacking, to cleaning! Thankfully, we are about 70% unpacked in our new house but this move has definitely been the easiest for a few reasons. Today, I’m bringing you a few moving tips that will hopefully help anyone who might also be planning a move in the future!

Tip #1: Start as early as possible.

As soon as you have an idea that you are going to be moving, start planning what you will be bringing, what you will be donating, and what you will be selling. Sort through all of your clothing and decide what you want to keep. For me personally, I created multiple piles: one to donate, one to (eventually) sell, and one to give to my little sister, and for the things I wanted to keep, I kept in my closet until it was time to move. Moving the clothing was the most stressful part for me so I can’t even imagine what it would be like if I hadn’t sorted through it all previously.

Tip #2: Create a schedule for the the couple of weeks leading up to the move.

I created a schedule for our apartment and each night, we had a room that we were going to work on. For example, Monday we worked on packing up the master bathroom, Tuesday we worked on packing up the laundry/utility room, etc. This kept the process from feeling extra overwhelming by breaking it up into smaller tasks.

Tip #3: Pack a small box with items that you will need the first couple of days after moving.

I wasn’t so good about this but it will save you a ton of time and hassle. Remember items like your make-up, shampoo/conditioner, razor, cotton balls, make-up remover, brush, etc. so that you can quickly get ready those first few mornings in your new home instead of wondering which box everything is in.

Tip #4: Rent moving containers/boxes that can be delivered/picked-up.

TJ was looking on Craigslist for cardboard boxes we could pick up and came across a local company called Lend A Box. After looking into their company a bit more, we immediately emailed them to set up a delivery date for our reusable containers. We chose the “2 Bedroom + Kitchen Package” (you can choose depending on the size of your place) and the entire process was SO convenient. Our movers jumped for joy when they came into our apartment and saw all of these stackable containers ready to go into their truck. We were able to keep these containers for about two weeks (you pay by the week), the Lend A Box delivered them right to our door, and picked them up from our house after we unpacked. They were SO accommodating Plus, it’s environmentally friendly!

Tip #5: Invest in/Save for movers.

This past move was the first time that TJ and I hired actual movers instead of asking his friends to help. I don’t know how we ever could have done it without them this time around. I used the website Thumbtack.com to search for movers and am now a huge fan of that site! I’m considering using it for some other home-improvement projects too.. Have any of you all tried that?

Hopefully some of these help get your mind right if you’re planning an upcoming move. Moving isn’t the most fun event but the feeling after you’ve accomplished it all is the best!

Thanks for reading!

Snow Day Ready with The North Face

<img src=’http://j.findyourinfluence.com/trackrun.aspx?tcode=MjA5NjQtbW91bnRhaW5pbnNwaXJlZC03MzQ0LUMtMQ’ style=’padding:0px;margin:0px;’ />

Sponsored by Zappos Luxury

This weekend’s snowy weather was the perfect time to try out my newest coat from The North Face’s Cryos Collection (available at Zappos Luxury). The North Face launched their Cryos collection this fall and is a new line of premium outerwear inspired by the mountains! While we didn’t get any snow in our area that actually stuck to the ground this weekend, it was so exciting getting to see the first snowfall of the year in December (we typically have to wait until Jan. or Feb.). Anyways, I’ve been a fan of The North Face for as long as I can remember. Remember when their ‘Denali’ fleece jackets were the coolest thing to wear?! Those used to be up at the very top of my Christmas list all throughout college. My love for the brand still runs strong and today I’m sharing one of the warmest coats you’ll ever find. I could bring this thing to the Arctic and be good to go.

I’ve also been a longtime customer of Zappos and was intrigued to hear about ‘Zappos Luxury’. I love Zappos because of their huge selection of shoes and clothing and Zappos Luxury offers free 2-day business shipping with all orders! I’m all about some free and fast shipping these days so I ordered this Cryos GTX Jacket last week and was happy to have it just in time for the weekend. While I’m usually a big budget-friendly/sale shopper, there are a couple of items I do not like to skimp on: winter coats and comfortable shoes. I tend to always be cold, no matter what, so if I want to spend any time outdoors in the winter, it’s crucial for me to have good quality outerwear.

We had a fantastic weekend enjoying the snowy weather the best we could, visiting our best friends at the hospital (they had their baby!), trying out a new pasta/white bean soup recipe, and going to our new town’s Christmas parade with my cousin’s family. It was a busy weekend, but filled with all the best holiday things!

We Bought a House!

Last Thursday, TJ and I closed on our very first home and we couldn’t be more excited! We found this house back on October 28th, made an offer that same day, and then found out the sellers accepted our offer on the 29th of October. Needless to say, the entire month of November has felt longer than usual since nothing is really “official” until closing day. We spent all day on Friday painting the living room before the movers came on Saturday and then spent Sunday unpacking. We still have a lot of unpacking to do but are SO excited to finally have a place to call our home! We absolutely loved the apartment we lived in for a few years but it was time to get more space, a yard for Colbie, a garage, a driveway AH the list goes on! We’re so not used to this so if you can’t tell, I am really pumped!

I’m planning on doing some sort of house tour on a video asap but, for now, I’ll give y’all a little bit of details into why we chose our house and about the process Q&A-style!

  • When did you start looking for a house?  We looked online for months leading up to this one (I became obsessed with refreshing the realtor app every 30 minutes) but seriously looked in person for just a few weeks before. We originally thought we wanted to stay closer to where our apartment was (Cary/Raleigh) and then started noticing that our area was getting to be out of our budget unless we wanted a true fixer upper. It became very competitive with other buyers in Cary. We then moved our search out to Apex/Holly Springs and found houses that were more my style for better prices.
  • What were you looking for in a house (top priorities)?  I’d say my top priorities were 1) natural light and a lot of windows, 2) not in need of TOO much work but not too new either (I am very excited about fixing up some of the rooms), and 3) a safe neighborhood. TJ’s top priorities were: 1) a fenced-in yard for Colbie and 2) a good driveway for a basketball hoop.
  • What is your favorite part about the house?  It is hard to narrow down my favorite parts but I’d probably say that the living room is up there mainly because of the windows and natural light throughout the rest of the house. I also really love the area it is in (very close to a bunch of parks). TJ’s favorite parts are the porch, deck, and fire-pit.
  • Will you miss living closer to Raleigh?  It will for sure take some getting used to but, overall, we won’t miss being closer. It is only a 25 minute drive to where we were originally. I grew up in smaller towns than where we are now so I’m excited for a whole new community.
  • Do you have any projects planned?  y e s. I shared a photo of our corner in our living room on Instagram but a lot of the other rooms are fairly outdated. The two biggest projects will be the kitchen and the master bathroom. A lot of yard work in the backyard is up there too!If you all have any other questions, let me know! Thanks for reading!

A Heartfelt and Memorable Gift Idea

Cyber Monday has come and gone but I’m excited to share a 40% off discount code (SHELBY40) with you today to use toward a fun and meaningful gift for a family member or friend! Snapfish provided me with a code to create a photo calendar and I am absolutely in love with how it turned out. TJ and I had a big year this year and one of the biggest (and most special) memories was our wedding. I thought it would be nice to create a 2018 calendar with some of my favorite wedding images for him to bring to his office. I’m still so thankful for these moments captured by our photographers Jake and Heather. Our wedding was a day we’ll never, ever forget.

If you’ve taken a memorable vacation this year, have had a baby, have gotten married, or just want to create a calendar filled with a bunch of favorite memories, a custom-made calendar is a great small gift idea for a loved one! Don’t forget to use the code SHELBY40 for 40% off your Snapfish calendar!

There were a lot of different styles to choose from (seasonal, speciality, simple) but I went with the most simple layout for a classic can’t-go-wrong look. It was super easy and quick to insert photos into each layout and choose whether I wanted one, two, three, or four photos per page. I also loved customizing it even more with the specific dates within each month including birthdays and anniversaries.

This would be the best thing to make if our family had gone on our annual beach trip this year too… I’d be making one for my mom, dad, and sisters. In my opinion, creating any sort of gift with photos is so special whether it be a mug, photo book, calendar, or canvas print. Luckily, all of those are available through Snapfish so be sure to check them out if you’re still trying to think of some great gift ideas!

What I’ve Purchased:

Happy Monday!

I hope everyone had the best Thanksgiving weekend. I was driving home last night and caught myself getting emotional (totally normal) just thinking about how awesome it is to have a holiday focused around family and gratefulness. It was so nice to spend time with my family from Rhode Island/Florida/NC who I don’t see nearly as much as I would like to! I already miss my family. There was a lot of fireside relaxing, hiking to the river, cooking and devouring, oyster roasting, wine drinking, and I even got a tiny bit of online shopping in. Thanksgiving might be my favorite holiday.

If you haven’t had a chance to get any online shopping done over the weekend, today is probably the best time to start with all of the great deals going on. I’ve listed some of my personal favorite sales going on and have picked out my favorite items below. I already ordered this navy coat for TJ, these cozy slippers (for myself), and some of these flannels for TJ and my dad.
