Our Rental-Friendly Kitchen Makeover Under $500

We recently added some changes to our kitchen in our apartment and, for under $500, it feels like a totally new kitchen! We added some faux marble counter-top paper, faux backsplash subway tile, switched out the cabinet pulls for something new, and removed two of the cabinet doors to open up the space more. Watch the video above for all of the details of the process and let me know if you have any questions! We did this over a weekend and the countertops were much trickier than the backsplash but so worth it!

  1. This is exactly the post I needed!! I have been looking for a peel and stick backsplash and countertop for a while now with this same vibe!

Curious to hear – how have both the tiles and especially the countertop held up?

  2. Did you test taking the backsplash off? Curious how this will leave our rental walls when we move out. Love the look!

    1. Yes, I did! However, our backsplash area was the same material as our countertops (formica) so it wasn’t dry wall. We didn’t have any issues though!

  3. I love all of this! Did you paint the walls? It may be my computer… but they look slightly pink? I checked out your “Every Paint Color…” post and didn’t see a picture of this kitchen! Just curious what colour you used, if so!

    1. Thank you!! We didn’t paint these walls so it must be the lighting. This kitchen actually gets pretty bad natural light most of the day!

  4. Hi! With the few single squares that were open after you connected the entire backsplash, did you just cut 3 individual half squares out of the backsplash and patch them in? I couldn’t tell from the video if there were any seams from that!

    1. Correct! I had complete control over how realistic the seams looked based on how I applied it/spaced it out! So, yes! I cut individual sections to fill them in!

  5. I love this! I’ve been trying to figure out ways to finish renovating my kitchen fairly cheaply after I put most of my budget towards refacing my cabinets. I love the idea of the countertop paper to make it look completely different! I will definitely be considering all of these ideas and more than likely using them. Thanks for sharing!
